Wyclef Jean at The Showbox

Wow. Wyclef was incredible. Way better than expected (and I had high hopes).

He did everything from Fugees throwbacks to Marley covers to his own hits to his pop collaboartions with Shakira and Akon, and absolutely brought the house down with an extended encore in which he spent a lot of time out in the crowd. It went from eulogizing Biggie, Tupac, Big Pun, JMJ and Alyiah to a full-on Obama for President rally (including a revised version of If I Was President, a killer Sam Cooke cover, and some rousing choruses of “Yes We Can”) to a super hype carnival party at the end. Besides singing, Wyclef played piano, rhythym guitar, lead guitar and congas.

Say what you want about ‘clef being a lousy Bob Marley ripoff — I say he’s one of the most talented musical activists we’ve got.

Really, really good show. Long live The Fugees.

Great review. I’ve gone from liking him, to not really paying attention to him, to liking him again. He is very talented indeed.

yeah I saw Wyclef years ago with most of the Refugee Allstars (just Lauren Hill was missing) and it is still one of my favourite shows of all time. He is so talented and I have never felt such bass going through me from a hip-hop show before. Great solos on the guitar to balance it out….

So, were the fans trying to towel him off?

Pat: He had insisted that everyone there “sacrifice an item of clothing” for the purpose of waving it wildly during the encore.
