Rob Goodlatte and Dan Romero use Twitter to conduct brief online polls. Fun idea, fun site, and nice implementation. Word of warning to would-be parallaxers: I believe think effect is this close to jumping the shark, and I’ve only seen it on like four sites. Rob and Dan do it really well, but still…

    Thanks for the mention :)

I definitely agree that background-foreground parallax is becoming a bit trendy today. StrawPoll is just supposed to be a fun little mini-site, not a serious piece, so a gimmicky PNG effect is par for the course. I wouldn’t use it on any project more serious than StrawPoll unless it that type of effect was really appropriate.

I think the parallax effect is great on teaser pages and “toy” sites that don’t take themselves too seriously. But like everything in design, it shouldn’t be slapped onto a site just because it’s trendy—it needs to be justified.

Hey Rob! Definitely wasn’t intended as a criticism of your site. I think you guys used the effect very well — it’s fun, and I like it. I just think, as you say, it can be a bit gimmicky if not used with care. :)
