My take: there are many canonical examples of interaction design. There are very, very few canonical examples of visual design on the web. It’s important that people talk about these things separately when we’re making a critique. They’re two totally separate disciplines and sites which have nailed one may downright suck at the other (see Google). Obviously, the best sites are those that excel in both areas — as well as others, like information architecture, accessibility, performance, copywriting, and so forth. Very few sites exist that truly work well on all levels.
