Someone needs to tell Christian Marclay that you can’t copyright an idea. Ideas are simply not protected under copyright law. While they’re at it, someone should tell a lot a web designers this, too. Even if something is a rip-off of an idea, that doesn’t make it illegal.

    According to the article, his lawyer “did” tell him that. (If not in so many words.)

    At least Apple asked first — which they probably didn’t have to do.

    Actually, and rather unfortunately, you can patent ideas, if they fall into the right categories. Welcome business patents and software patents (the most mundane are most definitely ideas and nothing more.)

    More likely, this isn’t a patented idea, but could be a trademark issue. Although, I also disagree with that idea.

    Yes, you can patent and idea. But you can’t copyright one. I don’t think this idea, though, would be patentable. And, I can’t see how it would be trademark-able, either.

    Marclay’s rights may be limited as his own film consisted of copyrighted works by other artists.

    Then he has no right to complain. Take a seat.
