First, they’ll kill off the print version and go 100% digital. Then, they’ve be aggressively local — “try to be the town Yahoo.” Then, they’d wonder openly about what happens to certain big-city newspapers that fancy themselves national papers as much as local papers. Interesting question. It seems like trying to compete with every other national news source is futile. I think it boils down to two choices: give up being so national or be hyper-topical instead. For example, become known for your super-deep politics coverage. It seems like the key is narrow-focused, hyper-level content.
