In the past couple weeks, I’ve received a few e-mails from folks wondering why my blog has been less active than in the past. The answer is pretty simple: I’ve been busy, and I haven’t had much time to write.
However, I wanted to take a moment to point out that I post links almost every single day, and my “links” are different than most folks’ in that I write — sometimes at length — my thoughts, reactions, and opinions to the link in question. Also, I allow comments on my links, which is a bit unusual. In that sense, they’re basically mini-blog posts.
The difference between links and blog posts, for me, is two fold: first, links are always about something I’ve read elsewhere. Blog entries may not be. Second, and more importantly, the commentary on my links is very off-the-cuff, written very quickly, and not always well thought-out. When I write a blog post, I prefer to take some time to really think things through, properly edit the content, etc. (of course, I sometimes fail at these things).
So, in short: if you’re looking for more frequency in your jeffcroft.com feed, subscribe to my links. Thanks so much for reading, everyone. I’ll try to get back to blog entries as soon as possible!
Update: By request, I’ve created a combined feed consisting of both blog entries and links.

Although I wasn’t one of the many who wrote in to question the lack of activity here but I figured lack of time is the primary reason for almost anyone. Comment’s on links? Novel approach but this should be interesting. I see a trend starting soon.

Thanks, Jorge! I’ve actually been doing comments on links for a couple years now. :)

I’ve always enjoyed the way you do your links list. I think having context on why you (or anyone else who keeps a links list) thinks the link is worth posting is helpful.

Thanks for pointing me towards the Links, I shall subscribe to them. May I ask a quick question though? Do you have a combined feed for both the Blog and the Links?
006 // Jeff Croft // 04.14.2008 // 1:42 PM
Hey Phil: I have a combined feed that includes everything posted at JeffCroft.com, including blog entries, links, comments, photos, photo favorites, events, etc. I don’t have one that just includes blog entries and links right now. You can find “The Everything Feed” on my homepage, if you’re interested.

….at least it gave you some material for a new blog post!

Thanks for pointing that out. It’d be great if you did a combined Blog and Links feed, I like that you have one for everything, but I imagine the comments here (I’m quite new to your site) are pretty busy and I’m not one for comments feeds.
Really like the design by the way, this place looks great.

Hi Jeff
Been following your site for a while now - how do you power this blog? With the way everything is aggregated together, links, twitter updates, photos, blog posts etc?
It’s an awesome site, especially in Safari!!
Thanks!!
Ben

It’s a good idea…I’ll work on it.
This site is built on Savoy, a Django-based publishing framework I’ve written at Blue Flavor. The plan is to open source Savoy, but it’s still a little ways away from being ready for that. When it is released, anyone with some Django know-how will be able to do similar stuff to what I’ve done here…

Phil, and everyone: there is now a combined feed of entries and links. Enjoy!

That’s great Jeff! Thanks!

I’d wondered why there was so little activity here. Hope all is well Jeff :)
Thanks for pointing out your links list, I’d not noticed them before. Also, you are the one and only blogger other than myself that does link lists as mini posts, complete with comments. My section “of the moment” has done it for years, but it’s taken till now to find anyone else that does it that way too. Also, conversely, I need to give an option to take mine OUT of the main RSS feed…
(PS, your comment system doesn’t work in FF3 b4, I’ve had to use IE7 to post this)

Thanks for that comment system report, Matt. I’ll check it out!

Hi Jeff, I just wanted to let you know a strange thing — I have been having a harder time remembering your name ever since you switched to the brown layout.
Your “brand” has significantly changed, and it’s taking some time for me to adjust!

the good ones are allways busy and have not much time. that is one good reason to still “hold the line” and wait for new posts. jeff you allways does a good job and so i have no problem to wait for new posts on your blog, if you write … than its really interesting for me (and mostly the others too i think). write just if you have time to and all would be good.
