Over the past several months, I’ve received quite a few e-mails and other “hellos” from web designers, developers, and similar in Lawrence or the surrounding areas. Seems there’s a larger community here than I might have expected. As such, I’ve been thinking about trying to get people together for a meetup of some sort.
I initially thought about doing a BarCamp or similar — a semi-formal conference type of thing. But I’ve decided that’s too much work for me to take on, at least right now. So instead, I’m proposing an informal gathering at a restaurant or bar in Lawrence. Someplace where we can drink and maybe eat dinner, but also someplace where we can chat and get to know a bit about each other.
I’ve not yet decided on a venue or exact date, but I’m currently targeting the fourth week in April (22nd to 28th), and probably looking at sometime Monday through Thursday evening (I’m out of town over both the weekend before and the weekend after).
If we find there’s quite a few people in the area interested in this sort of thing, perhaps we’ll consider something a bit more formal and educational. Until then, at least we can meet up and drink — right?
If you’d be interested in this sort of thing and you’re in the area (or willing to travel to Lawrence), shoot me an e-mail (you can use the contact form here on the site). I’ll compile a list of names and we’ll conduct the rest of the planning via e-mail. And, if you’ve got a blog, let your readers know about the idea.
Sound good? Let me know.

Damn — why do I have to live in the UK (where nothing much seems to happen — at least along these lines anyway)?

Dude - the logo - effing hilarious.

Do you have a part-time job at LogoMaid?

Great bit of subtle April Foolery with the logo.
Count me in with the drinking and socializing.

Sounds good to me. I’m in.
006 // James Bennett // 04.01.2007 // 6:15 PM
You had me at “alcohol”.
007 // Chris Mendoza // 04.01.2007 // 8:25 PM
Sounds excellent, hope I’m still here!
008 // James Asher // 04.01.2007 // 9:14 PM
I guess I’ll go.
009 // Baxter // 04.02.2007 // 8:34 AM
With people like you, Brian, James A. and James B. there, I’ll be the dumb guy navel-gazing in the corner, but I’ll try to make it.
010 // Brent O'Connor // 04.02.2007 // 8:42 AM
I might be interested.

Don’t worry. I know next to nothing about this web-stuff. Writing for a social-news site doesn’t really count.

As much as I’d like to find a way to disinvite Brian, I have to say that anyone who does any kind work work on the web — or is simply interested — is welcome. No need to be a designer or developer. Writers, photographers, illustrators, whatever — you’re all welcome.

Wish I still lived in Lawrence… this sounds like quite a fun night.

Food, you say? Beverages, is it? Web Geeks? Honest-to-goodness web geeks?! Where do I sign up?

Any reason to write off drinking as Individual Personal Development works for me.
I got a meetup request from Dan Connolly stating: W3C started a new HTML Working Group, and I’m co-chairing with Chris Wilson of Microsoft. It’s mostly done by email; I’d like to discuss this stuff in person. Jeff, do you mind using your webcleb and see if Dan will join the humble group?
Is this the start of mid-x-Midwest?

I’m up for it, though I’m a big wannabe. (Seriously.)
017 // Chris Escalante // 04.06.2007 // 10:34 PM
count me in.
018 // Chris Mendoza // 04.12.2007 // 12:02 PM
Count me in. Might as well spend my last day in the great state of Kansas eating and chillin!
019 // Dan Connolly // 05.01.2007 // 12:18 PM
bummer I didn’t find out about it in time! Let me know when then next one is, please.
