South By Southwest Interactive 2007 is only a couple of weeks away now, and I couldn’t be more excited. At the same time, the release of Web Standards Creativity — the new book by nine of your favorite web designers (and me, too) — is imminent. Since nine of the 10 of us will be in Austin early next month, we figured some shameless self promotion was in order.

So, we hereby invite you to stalk us down in Austin in an effort to win a free copy of the book — which, quite frankly, is freaking awesome.

No, seriously. It is. Web Standards Creativity is a gorgeous full-color, coffee table book full of cutting edge web design techniques (CSS, JavaScript, XHTML, transparent PNGs, and more,) with contributions from web design/development rockstars Simon Collison, Mark Boulton, Dan Rubin, Rob Weychert, Ethan Marcotte, Ian Lloyd, Andy Clarke, Cameron Adams, and Derek Featherstone — and me. And we’re giving away 10 copies of it at SXSWi!

Web Standards Creativity has been quite a while in the making. I actually finished my writing on it well before I finished Pro CSS Techniques, even though Pro CSS Techniques hit the shelves sooner. A large part of the extra time required to get Web Standards Creativity to print is the beautiful design that has been crafted for it. If you like pretty pictures, you’ll love this book. The basic concept of the book is that each of us wrote about one or two clever or interesting techniques that embodied not only the web standards way, but also creativity and innovative visual design. Compared to Pro CSS Techniques, which is mostly a code book, this one is very much a design book.

Here’s how it works:

  1. You print off the flyer, which includes a photo of each Web Standards Creativity author and the date, time and location of their Southby panel.
  2. You find each one of us — at our panel, at a party, in the hallways, passed out under a couch somewhere, whatever — and get us to imprint your flyer with our handy-dandy one-of-a-kind rubber stamps.
  3. The final WSC author to stamp your flyer will collect it (or at least the bottom portion of it) and note the date and time you finished the mission.

The first ten people with a fully-stamped flyer will win a free copy of the book. Simple as that.

When the idea was first floated, I thought it was brilliant. It seemed like a really fun way to not only promote our panels and our book, but also to encourage people to come us to us, meet us, chat with us, and shower us with gifts and favors in an effort to acquire our stamp of approval (okay, not so much on that last part). A large part of the Southby experience is socializing with other brilliant minds in the interactive world, and this gives you an excuse to go up and meet some of the world’s top web designers (and me, as well).

So, don’t be shy — come up and chat. We want to meet you and you want a free book. Right? Right.

See you in Austin.

That’s a lot of people to stalk. How about a trade? I’ll give you a copy of my book, and you give me a copy of your book. Sound good? :D

Since we’re on the same flight, I bet I could get 1 signature closer than most other people. :-)

I don’t know about the whole thing though, I’m really lazy. And furthermore, if last year is any evidence, I just drink a lot when I’m down there. :-)

Beware. I fully intend to steal your stamp and pretend I’m Jeff Croft for all of SXSW. In fact, instead of collecting stamps on my page, I’ll probably just try and collect all of your actual stamps. Either that or I’ll just steal all 10 copies of the book. You’ve been warned.

Oh geez. Some panelists just give out a couple copies to people who ask good questions :) I’ll print out the form and ask my ex-girlfriend for some advice on stalking.
